Remington, Remington: A Tale of Two Cities
Remington, Remington: A Tale of Two Cities
2024 novel by Michelle Bannister Williams
Welcome to Remington, Illinois, a fictional town grappling with increased diversity and the need for equity and inclusion. The novel intricately weaves the stories of the affluent Templeton family, depicting their experience as Black Americans as they navigate the complex social dynamics of their city in pursuit of the American Dream in this Chicago suburb. Career-driven Sierra searches for love while her father Frank balances supporting his multi-generational family through the pandemic as a Fortune 100 CEO.
Although the Templetons enjoy status from their custom built mansion and country club membership, they cannot escape the racial insensitivities and outdated beliefs that resist progress. Like many American cites, Remington is invisibly split as it is experienced differently by the white residents it was originally designed and built for and the black residents who have migrated there in search of a better life for their families. The book explores subtle and overt racism, often invisible to those least affected, akin to teaching a fish about the water that enables some to thrive while slowly drowning others. Although Remington is one singular physical place, there’s a divide in the experiences of its residents based onthe staunch commitment to tradition and the overt opposition to inclusion that would make it a better place for all.
